ABSTRACT

Introduction: The existing literature on the combination of acute pancreatitis (AP) and COVID-19 is scarce. The objective of our study is to compare the clinical outcomes and occurrence of long COVID syndrome in AP patients with and without COVID-19, while investigating the potential impact of COVID-19 on the severity, mortality rate, and long COVID syndrome in these patients.Materials and methods This retrospective, observational study was conducted at a single center. It included patients aged 18 years and above who were diagnosed with AP during the pandemic. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the results of RT-qPCR testing: the COVID-19 positive group and the COVID-19 negative group. The study aimed to compare the severity of AP, mortality rate, and occurrence of long COVID syndrome between these two groups.Result A retrospective review was conducted on 122 patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis between December 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023. Out of these patients, 100 were included in the study. The analysis revealed no significant differences in mortality rate, severity, and sequelae between AP patients with COVID-19 and those without COVID-19 (p > 0.005). However, a statistically significant difference was observed in the occurrence of long COVID syndrome, specifically in the presence of cough (P = 0.04).Conclusion This study demonstrates that the presence of COVID-19 in patients with pancreatitis does not lead to an increase in the mortality and severity rate of pancreatitis.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 appears to put people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) at a higher risk of catastrophic consequences and mortality. However, investigations on the hesitancy and vaccination behavior of PLWHA in China were lacking compared to the general population. From January 2022 to March 2022, we conducted a multi-center cross-sectional survey of PLWHA in China. Logistic regression models were used to examine factors associated to vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Among 1424 participants, 108 participants (7.6%) were hesitant to be vaccinated while 1258 (88.3%) had already received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Higher COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy was associated with older age, a lower academic level, chronic disease, lower CD4+ T cell counts, severe anxiety and despair, and high perception of illness. Lower education level, lower CD4+ T cell counts, and significant anxiety and depression were all associated with a lower vaccination rate. When compared to vaccinated participants, those who were not hesitant but nevertheless unvaccinated had a higher presence of chronic disease and lower CD4+ T cell count. Tailored interventions (e.g. targeted education programs) based on these linked characteristics were required to alleviate concerns for PLWHA in promoting COVID-19 vaccination rates, particularly for PLWHA with lower education levels, lower CD4+ T cell counts, and severe anxiety and depression.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic liver disease (CLD) patients and liver transplant (LT) recipients have an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in CLD patients and LT recipients is poorly understood. The present study aimed to evaluate the immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in CLD patients and LT recipients. METHODS: We searched electronic databases for eligible studies. Two reviewers independently conducted the literature search, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies. The rates of detectable immune response were pooled from single-arm studies. For comparative studies, we compared the rates of detectable immune response between patients and healthy controls. The meta-analysis was conducted using the Stata software with a random-effects model. RESULTS: In total, 19 observational studies involving 4191 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled rates of detectable humoral immune response after two doses of COVID-19 vaccination in CLD patients and LT recipients were 95% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 88%-99%) and 66% (95% CI = 57%-74%) respectively. After two doses of vaccination, the humoral immune response rate was similar in CLD patients and healthy controls (risk ratio [RR] = 0.96; 95% CI = 0.90-1.02; p = .14). In contrast, LT recipients had a lower humoral immune response rate after two doses of vaccination than healthy controls (RR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.59-0.77; p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis demonstrated that COVID-19 vaccination induced strong humoral immune responses in CLD patients but poor humoral immune responses in LT recipients.

ABSTRACT

Large emission reductions of anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NOx) due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown policies in China have been extensively reported since the outbreak, while assessments of sectoral emission changes during that period are still limited. In this study, a source-oriented community multiscale air quality (CMAQ) model was applied to quantify NO2 concentrations from major emission sectors. A new optimization approach was employed to obtain the sectorial emission reductions using satellite and ground-level observations as constraints. The optimized emissions significantly improved the model performance of NO2 during the lockdown period. February NOx emission changes varied with regions and sectors, with relatively larger reductions in transportation (286.6 kt) and industrial sources (260.1 kt). The maximum amount of NOx emission reduction occurred in the North China Plain (230.6 kt). Our work presents a quick and reliable technique for assessing sector-specific emission changes due to short-term emission control policies.
